newport_heat_storage_tanks.jpg“Starting with the right seed, the right plant, good growing and staff training we are able to grow a quality product time and time again.”

This is Hedon’s story and how we achieve our mission statement “Leading the Way”.

Policies

  • Hedon Salads growing and glasshouse procedures are set out in a site-specific policy document.
  • Its purpose is to record best practice.
  • It provides a framework for internal audits to ensure that agreed methodologies are been followed.

We begin with the right seed
We work closely with Rijkzwaan, to choose the right variety for good production and quality across all our products.
We are the first in line to trail and develop new varieties in our continuing efforts to offer the best in existing products and develop the new.

The Right Plant

  • The Grow Group NL provides us with the perfect start.
  • Plants are grown to an exacting plant specification.
  • Frequent manager visits ensure perfection is maintained.
  • Quality Control checks rigorously route out sub-standard stock.

Good growing

  • All crops are grown to and exceeding the controls as set by Assured Produce and Tesco’s Natures Choice
  • Most of our nursery managers are in house promoted staff that has developed at Hedon Salads
  • Utilising modern high ridge glasshouse with modern computerised environmental systems

  • All work practices are carried out within the guidelines set out by site FWAG reports.
  • Company has funded local environmental improvement schemes.
  • Combined heat and power
  • Gas powered electricity generators.
  • Free waste heat and CO2 is used to modify the glasshouse environment.
  • Heat dump tanks give usable heat during night times.
  • Considerable reduction in the wastage from conventional glasshouse heating systems

Both permanent movable and temporary thermal screens are used across all three sites.

This gives major reductions in early season heating costs.
