Combined heat & power

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint
Both Burstwick and Newport have Combined Heat and Power plants that help to reduce the carbon footprint. These CHP plants create electricity from gas engine driven generators which is then exported into the national grid to power local homes and businesses.
This is done by taking gas and using it in an internal combustion engine to turn the alternator which produces electricity. Approximately 60,000 MW of electricity is created year upon year by Hedon Salads. Waste products such as heat and carbon dioxide are also created during this process. These waste products are then captured from the engines, cleaned and released into the green houses where they are used to help support the growth of crops. The majority of carbon dioxide produced from this process is absorbed through the crops in order to gain higher yields and a better quality of product under our own management controls.
