Hedon Salads win Salad Grower of the Year 2005
Winner of the Rijk Zwaan sponsored 2005 Salad Grower of the Year award, Hedon Salads is among the UK's largest independent glasshouse companies. Founded by Tony Magistro and Tom Salmon in ‘93, it has grown at a phenomenal rate and now produces quality cucumbers, aubergines and peppers from three sites in East Yorkshire totalling 33 hectares.
To compete in today’s highly competitive market, the group has recently invested £3.5 million creating an impressive 80,000m2 all year round cucumber production facility at its Burstwick site, and invested in its North East Nursery - a joint venture with Glinwell Marketing. While the first year proved particularly challenging, the company is now on track to hit its target of 220 cucumbers per m per year, writes Sue Jupe.
