What we grow

We grow salad crops under glass all year round. We propagate all our young plants from seed or from young grafted plants produced by Howden Plants Ltd.

We grow all colours of sweet peppers. All the fruits start Green then change to red, yellow or orange when they ripen, depending on the variety. These are grown from seed sown in November and planted out in late December and early January. Green fruits are then ready for harvest by late March and coloured ripe fruits from early April. These times do vary depending on how much sun we have in the late winter period. We produce around 8.5 million Sweet peppers each season starting in March and ending in November.

We grow Cucumbers from three crops; these are grown from seed and planted in January, April and July. We aim to produce 65 fruits per plant space throughout the season. The crops are replanted so that quality and production is maintained throughout the growing season. We aim to produce 6 million cucumbers every year from these three crops. Crops are planted in January and start production in late February with the last crop finishing in early October.

With the help of our sister nursery North East Growers at Selby we are the UK largest Aubergine grower. Grown initially from seed in early November, these plants are grafted on to a tomato root stock for increased vigour. We plant the crop in early January to produce over 10 million aubergines every year.

We also grow Tomatoes, these again are grafted young plants planted in January and start production in March through to November. Our aim is to produce 20 kg from every plant.

We also produce specialist crops such as Long Sweet Pointed Peppers and Sweet bite peppers and have the capacity to produce lettuce and a small amount of pot plants for the Christmas period.
